FDA has raised significant public health concerns, particularly due to the potential risk of Salmonella contamination associated with tomatoes sold under the H&C Farms label. Classified as a Class I recall—the most serious category—this alert emphasizes that consumption of these tomatoes could lead to severe illness or even death . The affected products were distributed in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina between April 23 and April 28, highlighting the urgent need for consumer awareness in these regions.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled tomatoes distributed across southern US states following concerns over potential salmonella contamination. The recall was initially announced on May 2. However, the warning has now been elevated to a Class I recall, the most severe level, indicating the product poses a significant risk of illness or death.

H&C Farms Label tomatoes were initially voluntarily recalled in early May after Williams Farms Repack LLC distributed potentially contaminated tomatoes to wholesalers in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia between April 23 and 28, according to the FDA. The tomatoes were sold in packages ranging from three-packs to 25-pound bags. At the time, no illnesses had been reported. Last week, the FDA upgraded the recall to a Class I, as reported by The New York Times, indicating a reasonable probability that exposure to the contaminated product could cause serious health consequences or death.

Georgia and the Carolinas -- though it was not said what specific stores may have sold the tomatoes.

Consumers who have purchased these potentially contaminated tomatoes are strongly advised not to consume them. Instead, they should either return the products for a full refund or properly discard them . Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fever; thus, individuals experiencing such symptoms should seek immediate medical attention . This incident underscores the critical role of regulatory agencies in safeguarding public health through timely alerts and recalls.
