San Diego County could see showers and thunderstorms beginning Tuesday afternoon and continuing into Wednesday as an area of low pressure moves across Southern California, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say the best chance for thunderstorms will be over the mountains, though some storms may drift into the valleys and even coastal areas by Tuesday night.
Subtropical moisture and atmospheric instability are expected to accompany the system, bringing the potential for cloud-to-ground lightning, heavy rain and small hail, especially in mountain and desert regions.
Despite the storm activity, temperatures are expected to remain steady with continued humidity, the NWS said.
High temperatures Tuesday are forecast to reach 70 near the coast, 73 inland, 76 to 81 in the western valleys, 75 to 85 in the mountains and around 100 in the deserts.
By Thursday, drier air will begin to move in as the system exits the region. A gradual warming trend is expected heading into the weekend, along with a return of the marine layer and low clouds near the coast during the night and morning hours, according to meteorologists.
High pressure is forecast to build slowly into early next week, bringing warmer and more stable weather to the region.
