It all comes down to this. For the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy, Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will give their all on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Before the 2025 edition kicked off, hardly anyone backed either of the teams to make it this far. But here they stand. With one hand on the IPL trophy.
Whoever holds their nerves and rises above amid intense pressure and with history on the line shall emerge victorious. But this isn’t just another IPL Final. RCB and PBKS are two of three teams that have been part of the IPL since its beginning and haven’t won yet. 18 years of waiting for a trophy will end for one of them.
Virat Kohli’s dream
But as is often the case in cricket, it’s more about personal stories than the team. For RCB, the man in the spotlight is Virat Kohli. The former captain is the face and backbone of the franchise. He’s been with them since the beginning. Kohli’s the only player who’s played each season and not won even one IPL trophy.
At this point, no one knows for how long Kohli will play. And considering it’s just the 4th IPL Final he’s reached, who knows when the next one will come? RCB will want to win the title for him. Not much dissimilar to what Team India did for Sachin Tendulkar in the ODI World Cup 2011.
RCB captain Rajat Patidar has even openly stated their desire to win the IPL 2025 Final for him. “We will try and win this for him (Kohli). He has done so well for India and RCB over the years,” Patidar told reporters in Ahmedabad.
This will be 18 years in the making for Kohli. If there’s anyone who deserves the IPL trophy, it’s him. After all he’s done for RCB and the tournament, he deserves at least 1 title before retiring. In the last 12 months, he’s managed to win 2 ICC trophies, and this will be a cherry on top of that.
Shreyas Iyer’s redemption story
The last 15 months have been topsy-turvy for PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer. Despite being one of the best ODI batters and a regular in the Test team, he was cut from the central contracts. The reason was a back injury. He claimed it was still bothering him and pulled out of a few Ranji Trophy matches but the BCCI thought otherwise.
Having missed the last IPL due to that same back injury, he returned to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and took them to their 2nd title. And what happened? Shreyas wasn’t retained by KKR before the 2025 auction. He’s won the Champions Trophy 2025 since then but wasn’t included in India’s Test squad for England despite solid performances.
And now Shreyas has a point to prove. To his doubters and his old franchise. How many has he done that? By winning the IPL 2025 trophy with PBKS. He’s already the only captain to take three different teams to a final and could become the first captain to win an IPL trophy with two teams.
History awaits Shreyas and he’s ready. “We (PBKS) have been consistent this season. And it all started here in Ahmedabad. Now we are in the final. I am very excited,” he said on the eve of the match.
