The month of June is upon us – and that means local government boards have only a few weeks left to approve their budget plans for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins in July. The Carrboro Town Council is ahead of the game: they’ll likely approve their budget plan this week. But other boards are heading into the home stretch as well – including the Orange County Board of Commissioners, which will likely approve a “resolution of intent” to pass their budget plan this week. (A final vote won’t come for another two weeks, though.)

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Orange, Durham and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 3. This week’s meeting is all budget-focused: the council will hold a final public hearing before taking a vote to approve Town Manager Patrice Toney’s budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year. Click here for the full agenda.

Orange County Commissioners meet twice this week: Tuesday, June 3, in the Whitted Building, and Thursday, June 5, in the Southern Human Services Center, at 7 p.m. both evenings. Tuesday’s business meeting will feature a vote to approve a countywide solid waste master plan, and proclamations recognizing Juneteenth and LGBTQ Pride Month. Thursday’s meeting is budget-focused: after extended discussions of capital investment, school funding, and taxes and fees, the board will likely cast an initial vote on County Manager Travis Myren’s full budget proposal – though a final vote won’t come until June 17. The Chapel Hill Town Council meets twice this week. Their regular meeting is Wednesday, June 4, at 6 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library, to continue discussing interim Town Manager Mary Jane Nirdlinger’s recommended budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The council will also reconvene at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 5, for a closed-session meeting to continue the process of hiring a new permanent town manager. Get links to both agendas here.

And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board is slated to meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 5. Their agenda will be posted at this link.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Chatham County School Board meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 2. Their agenda includes a discussion and a possible vote on an updated plan for the district’s AIG (Academically or Intellectually Gifted) program for the upcoming school year. Get the full agenda at this link.

The Durham City Council meets twice this week: Monday, June 2, at 7 p.m. and Thursday, June 5, at 1 p.m. Monday’s meeting includes a public hearing on next year’s budget and capital improvement plan, as well as a resolution supporting Amazon workers in Durham who are attempting to unionize. The council will likely vote to approve the budget and capital improvement plan at Thursday’s work session. Click here for links to both agendas.

Finally, Durham County Commissioners meet all day Monday, June 2, beginning with a brief work session at 9 a.m. and continuing with a budget discussion at 1 p.m. Click here to view the agendas for both meetings.
