78 Year-Old Rock Legend Still Thrills in London

Iggy Pop, the 78-year-old "Godfather of Punk," at Alexandra Palace in London on May 28, 2025, exemplifies the enduring vitality and relevance of aging rock musicians. Despite his advanced age, Pop energized the audience with a dynamic performance that included classic hits such as "The Passenger" and "Lust for Life," alongside newer material from his album *Every Loser* . This event not only showcased Pop's remarkable stage presence but also highlighted the broader phenomenon of veteran artists who continue to captivate audiences well into their later years.

An upended coffin stood ominously stage left, as Iggy Pop (now 78), who notoriously cheated death with his hard-drugs habits well into middle age, slunk onstage and tore off his skimpy leather waistcoat to perform, as ever, topless.

TV Eye, a menacing grind that Iggy first created with his chaotic first band The Stooges in 1970, later to influence punk rockers of every stripe, the wrinkly-torso’d singer slipped his cordless microphone suggestively inside the waist of his black slacks.

As he lolloped around up there, in what proved a terrific and explicitly life-affirming show, it was hard to forget his incorrigible antics as a performer over the years: as recently as the mid-2010s, Iggy, né James Newell Osterberg, was nightly defying doctor’s orders by hurling himself repeatedly into the crowd, exacerbating his spinal scoliosis, and necessitating hip replacements.

. James Osterberg Jr, aka Iggy, lurched on stage after his seven-piece band to the sound of dogs barking: scoliosis has left him with one leg shorter than the other. He was, as ever, shirtless. The impressive torso of before is just as striking in old age. Big screens showed his leathery, wrinkled flesh in close-up — bulging out here, sagging there. Lustrous straw-coloured hair and gleaming American teeth added a strangely youthful patina to this extraordinary tableau of the ageing male body.  The Stooges’ proto-punk songs dominated the setlist. They formed a formidable wall of noise, shaped by the distinctively brutal riffs and exhilarating surges in power that lifted the group above other garage-rock primitives. A pair of horn players added further refinement to the primal stomp. Iggy whooped and hollered his way through “T.V. Eye” and geed up his forceful drummer during “Raw Power”.

Iggy's successful show reinforces the idea that age does not diminish artistic expression or audience appeal. As he continues to perform at notable events like the Bearded Theory music festival, it is clear that Iggy Pop remains a significant figure in rock music . The vitality he displayed during his London concert serves as an inspiration for both emerging musicians and fans alike, illustrating that passion for music transcends generational boundaries.
