Colorado measles outbreak: 3 more cases tied to Turkish Airlines flight that landed at DIA ...Middle East

News by : (Colorado Sun) -

Colorado on Sunday reported three more measles cases tied to a Turkish Airlines flight that landed at Denver International Airport last month, bringing the total number of infections connected to the flight to at least six.

Five of those cases — including all three announced Sunday — are in Colorado residents, meaning the incident now meets the official definition of an outbreak. However, there is no evidence so far of ongoing transmission occurring in Colorado.

This is the first time since at least the mid-1990s that the state has recorded a measles outbreak among Colorado residents.

Of the three new infections reported Sunday, one is in an adult from Arapahoe County who was on the flight. The two other infections are in unrelated adults from El Paso County who were apparently exposed inside the airport.

The person from Arapahoe County was vaccinated against measles, while the two from El Paso County were not, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

CDPHE said people who were in the following locations may have been exposed to the infected travelers and should monitor themselves for measles symptoms:

Those who develop symptoms should call their doctor or their local public health agency. Symptoms start with a fever, cough, runny nose or red eyes. The telltale flat, non-itchy rash shows up shortly thereafter.

An out-of-state resident is believed to have been infectious on Turkish Airline flight 201, which landed at DIA on May 13. That person then traveled through DIA and stayed overnight at a hotel near the airport before flying out the following day, according to CDPHE.

Three Arapahoe County residents who were on the flight later became sick, including a child who was hospitalized. The two El Paso County residents were at DIA on May 14 at around the same time as the infectious traveler.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines a measles outbreak as three or more related cases. By this definition, Colorado saw its first measles outbreak of 2025 earlier this year when an Archuleta County resident and two out-of-state residents were infected in the state. But the outbreak tied to the Turkish Airlines flight is the first this year to infect three or more Colorado residents.

Hope Shuler, a CDPHE spokesperson, wrote in an email that the agency does not have historical outbreak data for measles. But Shuler noted the last year to see so many measles cases was 1996, when Colorado reported seven cases.

Including those tied to the Turkish Airlines flight, Colorado has now recorded 10 measles infections in state residents so far in 2025.
