Paul has won in straight sets for the first time in Paris in 2025 and will make his French Open quarter-final debut next week.

And his latest victory has ended a 22-year wait in American tennis at the second Grand Slam of the year.

He has become the first men’s singles player from the United States to reach the French Open last eight since Andre Agassi in 2003.

Agassi, who lifted the title four years prior, also won in straight sets to advance into the quarter-finals but lost to Guillermo Coria.

The eight-time Grand Slam champion has now been joined by his compatriot Paul as one of the French Open knockout stage stars.

Paul will play his second quarter-final match of the year after he progressed to the same stage at the Australian Open.

A semi-final exit in Melbourne two years ago remains as his best ever finish at a Grand Slam tournament.

And Paul could be set for a mammoth task in his bid to reach the final four at Roland Garros.

The winner between Ben Shelton and Carlos Alcaraz will meet him in the quarter-final.

Shelton was taken to five sets in the first round by Lorenzo Sonego before he received a walkover to progress past Hugo Gaston.

He then beat Matteo Gigante to seal a clash against Alcaraz, who has overcome Giulio Zeppieri, Fabian Marozsan and Damir Dzumhur.

The reigning champion will be the second Spaniard in the Open Era to win two French Open titles should he go all the way.

Alcaraz would join Sergi Bruguera on the same number whilst the legendary Rafael Nadal remains far ahead on 14 in total.

Meanwhile, Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie have become the first two British to reach the fourth round since 1963.

Draper will meet Alexander Bublik, whilst Norrie comes up against Grand Slam legend Novak Djokovic.
