A back-and-forth match saw the pair tied at 9-9 after 18 legs in a race to 10.

Suljovic had recovered from 5-2 down before pinning double two to complete his checkout and lead 10-9.

However, he had not yet won the match due to a unique rule used at the event.

Players must win by two clear legs once the scoreline reaches 9-9.

Sudden death is only introduced if the match continues for an additional six legs to a 12-12 tie.

Suljovic was unaware of the rule, thinking he had clinched victory by taking a 10-9 lead.

The Gentle immediately turned to his left in celebration as he wildly pumped his fists and jumped into the air.

He only realised his error after turning around to approach the referee for a handshake.

Meanwhile, Jenkins watched on from the oche with a stern expression.

After having the rule explained to him, Suljovic held his hand up apologetically as he retrieved his darts from the board.

He was able to see the funny side, though, laughing and smiling whilst walking back to the oche.

Fortunately for Suljovic, he went on to win the following leg to seal an 11-9 victory and eliminate the 14th seed.

Another win followed over Gary Anderson in the second round to reach to last eight.

Suljovic was ultimately beaten by eventual runner-up James Wade in the quarter-finals.

His run to the last eight represented his best performance in the World Matchplay at the time.

However, he would go on to surpass his run to the last eight three years later.

Suljovic reached the final in Blackpool in 2018 before losing to Anderson.

The match was his third PDC major final following a defeat at the 2016 European Championship and a win over Anderson in the 2017 Champions League of Darts final.
