Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride traded the pigskin for a baseball on Saturday, throwing out the first pitch before the Arizona Diamondbacks faced the Washington Nationals at Chase Field.
“A little nervous,” McBride told reporters before taking the mound. “Obviously, this is not the sport I’m most comfortable in, but I’m excited to throw the first pitch. I think it’ll be fun. Obviously a lot of the same fan base that I deal with too, so I think it’ll be fun to get this game started the right way.”

The tight end, who played baseball growing up, said getting out on the diamond for Kyler Murray’s celebrity softball game helped get him right for it.

McBride received a contract extension that made him the NFL’s highest-paid tight end this offseason, that is until George Kittle got one slightly richer shortly after. The new deal keeps McBride in Arizona through the 2029 season.
He led the Cardinals in receptions (111) and receiving yards (1,146), earning Pro Bowl honors for the first time in his third season.
“Just trying to show my face a little bit more, and this is kind of the first step,” McBride said. “Excited to be a part of this game and throw out the first pitch tonight.”
What other notable Diamondbacks first pitches have come this season?
The Diamondbacks rung in the new season with some of the most notable Arizona State football players tossing out the ceremonial pitch ahead of the opener.
ASU quarterback Sam Leavitt, wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, defensive lineman C.J. Fite and safety Xavion Alford each had tosses, while head coach Kenny Dillingham brandished the team’s Big 12 Championship trophy to remind Valley onlookers of the recent success.

Ironically, the quarterback threw the worst pitch and was the only one to not find his catcher’s glove.
More recently, Phoenix native and former Arizona Sports intern Siera Santos of MLB Network’s Intentional Talk appeared to manifest her poor pitch while on with Burns & Gambo.
