Tennessee has its sights set on the Super Regionals and a potential trip to the College World Series, and the Vols will hit Sunday one win away from capturing the Knoxville Regional.
The Vols entered Saturday’s winner’s bracket after a clean and smooth opening win over Miami (OH). With Liam Doyle earning Game 1 designations, it was up to Marcus Phillips vs. the Bearcats, and he was solid throughout.
Phillips would earn the win after covering 6 innings and allowing 3 earned runs with 8 strikeouts. His only real challenge was the 3rd inning when Cincinnati scored 2 runs, but Phillips recovered and was strong throughout.
Offensively, leadoff hitter Gavin Kilen set the table all night long with a 4-for-6 night at the plate. His 3 runs scored led Tennessee with Dean Curley (4) and Andrew Fischer (3) leading the team in RBI.
Curley did have a home run in this one, but the big blow came off the bat of Fischer. With Tennessee clinging to a 4-2 lead in the 6th, Fischer drove in 2 runs with a double to provide a cushion. He later came around to score on a bases-loaded walk to make the score 7-2.

The next game for Tony Vitello’s group will be at 6 pm ET Sunday night, and all it takes is one more win to send Tennessee into the Super Regionals.
