Liverpool boss Arne Slot may have had a dream debut campaign, but was it enough to earn talkSPORT’s Manager of the Season honour?
Our presenters were spoilt for choice given the wonders several managers across the league have worked this term.
Slot enjoyed a dream first season at AnfieldGettyWhether it was delivering trophies to long-starving clubs, steering sides away from relegation or getting a team to European football a season after almost being relegated, there’s been plenty of positive stories to come from the dugout.
But there was no general consensus and one presenter even dipped into the Championship for their choice.
Before we reveal the selections, find out who Ally McCoist, Jeff Stelling and Andy Townsend named in their Team of the Season here.
The talkSPORT team also named their Player of the Season, although there was an almost-unanimous verdict on who received that award.
Without further ado, here’s who the talkSPORT presenters named as their Manager of the Season!
Given Slot had the unenviable task of replacing the enigmatic Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, no-one quite knew what to expect from Liverpool this season.
But the Dutchman defied all expectations and led the Reds to a 20th English top flight title with a 10-point margin between them and second-placed Arsenal.
Such a monumental achievement made Slot an easy choice for Charlie Baker.
“It’s difficult to look beyond Arne Slot,” Baker said.
“He came in, difficult job. Always difficult being the man after the man and he’s come in, steadied the ship immediately and he’s made the players play for him in his own style.
The Dutchman helped Liverpool win the league with four games to spareAFP“I think he’s been absolutely excellent.”
Paul Hawksbee conceded he too could have easily gone for Slot as well as Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
After finishing 17th in his first season at the City Ground, Nuno led the Reds to a stunning 7th-place finish that Forest’s berth in the Conference League next season.
However, Hawksbee felt Everton’s resurgence under David Moyes was worthy of the Manager of the Season award.
“Went back to his old club under a lot of pressure with the threat of relegation before going into their brand new stadium and absolutely transformed it,” Hawksbee said.
“I thought he did an amazing job.”
talkSPORTMoyes picked up an impressive 1.63 points per match in his second stint at Everton[/caption]When Moyes took over from Sean Dyche in January, the Toffees were one point above the relegation zone at the halfway mark of the campaign.
Everton ultimately finished 13th and 23 points clear of the bottom three.
Andy Jacobs ignored conventional wisdom when naming his choice and cast his gaze to the second tier.
“I’m going to go for Frank Lampard,” Jacobs said.
“He went to Coventry, wasn’t expected to do much, got them into the play-offs.
“I think he’s got potential as a manager.
“He did really well at Chelsea in the first spell and eventually he’s going to turn out to be a very good manager.”
Similarly to Moyes at Everton, Lampard took over the Sky Blues when they sat a lowly 17th in the Championship and two points from the bottom three.
But he defied his critics and guided the Sky Blues agonisingly close to a berth in the play-off final.
Although Crystal Palace may have had a middling Premier League campaign, they caused an almighty boilover to win the FA Cup with victory over Manchester City in the final.
Securing the first major trophy in the Eagles’ 164-year history was enough for Darren Bent to declare Oliver Glasner as his choice.
“Getting them to a cup final, yeah, Glasner,” Bent said.
Glasner instantly etched himself into club folklore with the FA Cup triumphGettyWe then move on to our final selection, which was made by Andy Goldstein.
“Ruben Amorim,” Goldstein said.
“Hear me out, hear me out.”
Unfortunately there was no time for Goldstein to explain himself as Bent simply cut him off out of sheer disbelief.
Bent was more than justified to do so given Amorim oversaw United’s worst season since the 1973/74 campaign in which they were relegated.
