A Brighton man charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a 34-year-old man killed him over a dispute involving paying for a phone, according to an arrest affidavit.

Johnny Jose Moreno, 52, was arrested after police say he fatally stabbed Victor Ibarra at Eastgate Village mobile home park in the 3000 block of East Bridge Street on May 22.

Officers responded to the home at around 5 p.m. and found Ibarra with two stab wounds to his chest and abdomen, police wrote in the arrest report. There was a large kitchen knife on the counter with blood on the tip, and witnesses said there had been a fight between Ibarra and an unknown man.

Ibarra was taken to Platte Valley Hospital and was pronounced dead at around 8 p.m.

Police later learned that Ibarra was already at the home when Moreno walked in with a small aluminum bat in his back pocket and started a fight.

A witness in the home repeatedly tried to break up the fight, at one point taking a knife away from Moreno, but he managed to find another knife and stabbed Ibarra and chased him around the kitchen, police said.

After Ibarra stumbled outside and a witness pushed the kitchen table in front of Moreno to try to stop him, he started slamming the knife into the table and said he was “made for this (expletive,)” witnesses told police.

At one point during the confrontation, Moreno asked Ibarra if he was going to “pay for the phone” and Ibarra said no. A tipster later told police Moreno had also stolen Ibarra’s car keys in a previous altercation.

Moreno and his girlfriend were driven away from the mobile home park by a witness who told police she was afraid she would get hurt if she didn’t comply, and she later dropped him off in Aurora.

Moreno is in custody on a $2 million bail and is set to appear in Adams County District Court on July 1.
