Phil Taylor has warned Luke Littler he will need staying power if he is to surpass his world title record.
‘The Nuke’ suffered disappointment in his bid to land back-to-back Premier League Darts titles, losing out 11-8 to Luke Humphries in the final at London’s O2 Arena on Thursday.
GettyLittler suffered a reverse result in this year’s Premier League Darts final, having beaten Luke Humphries in the 2024 decider[/caption]A second competition crown would have seen Littler join Michael van Gerwen and Taylor as the only players to win two consecutive titles.
Despite failing to join ‘The Power’ in the record books on this occasion however, the 18-year-old has already made plenty of history since bursting onto the scene at the PDC World Championship in 2023.
After his stunning run to the final of the Alexandra Palace showpiece as a 16-year-old, Littler followed that up by becoming the youngest darts world champion with victory in the tournament in January.
The teenage sensation’s rapid rise has seen widely tipped to surpass Taylor’s all-time record of 16 world titles.
And while Littler would appear to have plenty of time on his side to catch up with the sporting great, his chances of doing so were recently called into question by fellow star Nathan Aspinall.
Speaking to talkSPORT, ‘The Asp’ cast doubt over his future, claiming he felt the world champion could ‘be off in about five years’.
Littler quickly shut down this suggestion by reassuring fans he would still be playing in ten years time, and insisted he would only retire if he managed to catch up with Taylor’s unmatched feat.
But Taylor has now issued a warning to Littler if he is to overtake him in the history books, insisting he will have to stay at the top of the sport for well over ten years.
Appearing on talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs, the darts icon said jokingly of the youngster’s pursuit of his record: “I’ll have him done for that, I’ve got some gruesome friends now!
“If he wants to carry on and win, beat my records, then he’s going to have to be dedicated. And I mean dedicated for at least 25 years.”
GettyTaylor won a staggering 87 major titles in his career[/caption] Littler needs to add 15 more world titles to his collection to match the retired star’s stunning recordAFPIt’s fair to say Taylor set a high bar with regards to longevity in darts.
The Stoke-born star enjoyed a 31-year professional career between 1987 and 2018, which saw him win two BDO world titles in 1990 and 1992, before triumphing at the PDC World Championship on 14 occasions between 1995 and 2013.
And while he insisted Littler must be dedicated in order to challenge his record, Taylor admitted the starlet could opt to make a living off social media instead if he wished to.
Littler has already featured in several popular YouTube videos, including one which saw him almost lose to social media star Angryginge in a game of darts in February.
The Warrington native also boasts 1.9 million Instagram followers – nearly double that of Van Gerwen, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price combined.
On this, Taylor remarked: “If he gets the right advice and the right person looking after him, then he could do other things, like social media.
Littler has already starred in one viral YouTube video, and boasts an impressive following online@GingeUpdates X” Some people make millions out of it.”
And while Littler is not short of options on how best to make a living, his future for now is firmly fixed on darts.
The youngster has been confirmed to represent England in the 2025 World Cup of Darts, where he will put his rivalry with Premier League winner Humphries aside as the pair team up on the world stage.
The showpiece event will run for four days between June 12 and 15, and will take place in Frankfurt, Germany.
