Colorado on Thursday reported its second case of measles in two days — both of which are now linked to a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul that landed at Denver International Airport.
An adult from Arapahoe County who was vaccinated against the disease is the latest person reported to be infected, making this a rare breakthrough infection. The adult is reported to be recovering at home.
The announcement comes one day after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported an unvaccinated toddler, also from Arapahoe County, had been hospitalized with measles.
CDPHE said Thursday that both the toddler and the adult were passengers on Turkish Airlines flight 201, which landed at DIA on May 13. According to the flight-tracking website FlightAware, that flight took off from Istanbul.
A third passenger on that flight — a person who traveled through DIA and then stayed overnight at a nearby hotel before flying out again — is believed to have been infectious with measles on the flight.
Thursday’s case marks the seventh measles infection in a Colorado resident this year. (The infectious traveler, as well as a traveler who recently stayed overnight at a hotel in Pueblo, are not included in Colorado’s tally for infections because they live out-of-state.)
Public health workers are now attempting to contact all passengers and crew from the flight who sat or worked near the infectious traveler. They are also contacting all families who flew with lap children — generally kids under 2 years old. Kids are especially vulnerable to getting really sick with measles, and vaccination is typically not offered to children under 1, though those who will be traveling to places with measles outbreaks can be vaccinated as young as 6 months old.
CDPHE says anyone who was on the flight who develops symptoms of measles should contact their local public health agency. Symptoms typically develop 7 to 21 days after exposure — meaning those exposed on the Turkish Airlines flight may not see symptoms until around June 3. The disease starts with cold-like symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose or red eyes. The telltale rash emerges a few days later, starting on the face and spreading.
In addition, CDPHE released a list of locations visited by the adult whose infection was reported Thursday. Anyone who was in the following locations at the specified times may have been exposed to measles and should monitor themselves for symptoms for 21 days after.

That means breakthrough infections — those that occur in people who have been vaccinated — are rare but still possible. However, vaccinated people who are infected typically get less sick and are less likely to pass the virus onto others.
There are two free vaccination clinics scheduled for people who may have been recently exposed. One is on Friday at Arapahoe County Public Health, at Altura Plaza, 15400 E. 14th Place in Aurora, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The other is on Saturday at Aurora Community Connection, 9801 E. Colfax Ave. in Aurora (in the courtyard behind the building) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
