Hands-on with ‘Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess’ on Nintendo Switch 2 ...Middle East

“Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess” was one of Capcom’s more experimental games. The title mixed action-game elements with tower defense and real-time strategy to create a memorable experience as the swordsman Soh escorts the priestess Yoshiro through a mountain tainted with evil spirits.

The unusual amalgam of genres finds a home on the Nintendo Switch 2, with this version adding two new features. The first is Otherworldly Ventures, a new mode for the game that simplifies some the action-strategy elements while turning the game into a Rogue-lite.

Players have one life to get Soh and Yoshiro through several waves of monsters. Players start with a handful of villagers, which players convert to woodsmen and other roles. That’s done using crystals that players gather by purifying parts of the stage during daytime. They have to act fast because night brings the evil spirits called the Seethe, which gun for the priestess.

Players have to position their small army in strategic spots to attack foes and protect Yoshiro. They can use crystals from battling spirits and purifying parts of a village to also repair helpful obstacles such as walls or contraptions such as a tower, where archers can snipe foes from afar. The crystals can be even used to buy upgrades at Wayshrines.

Once they get through a wave, Soh will have to run to Yoshiro, so that she can give him a reward. This is where the Rogue-lite elements come in. Players have to choose one reward and it can be to boost to everyone’s job levels, add a new role or villagers or gain power-ups for Soh. Players have to be strategic with their upgrades because they have just one life to get through the enemy gantlet.

The other new part of “Kunitsu-Gami” on Nintendo Switch 2 is the mouse controls. It’s done by placing the right Joy-Con on the table vertically. The controller acts as an optical mouse, except that it isn’t as ergonomic. Players have to bend their wrist, trying to come up with the right grip to access the analog stick, face buttons and shoulder buttons.

Using the Joy-Con 2 as a mouse, the game felt more natural when assigning jobs and placing troops on the field, but the control scheme is a double-edged sword. The learning curve is high as the right analog stick doesn’t do anything and moving the Joy-Con 2 as a mouse manipulates the camera. The left Joy-Con 2 works as normal with the left analog stick moving Soh and the shoulder buttons working for defense and other moves.

Meanwhile, the right Joy-Con 2’s shoulder buttons are for attacking while the face buttons have different functions. The problem comes with muscle memory and the years of controller play cementing the idea of the right analog stick for camera movement. It will take time to relearn how to play with a mouse and a left analog stick. That’s especially true when players switch to Control mode in-game and the left analog stick now controls the camera and the mouse is used to place troops on the battlefield.

It’s awkward and doesn’t feel as natural as I’d hope, but then again, the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls could be a learning curve issue that smooths out over time. If a game does use the control scheme well, it could unlock other genres or open up a better way to play for a new generation of players.

“Kunitsu-Gami” is scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5.
