The area devoted to the arts at Liberty Station and the foundation that supports it now will be known by the same name – Arts District Liberty Station.
The district, a 100-acre section at the north end of the community, features theaters, galleries and artists’ spaces. Since its inception in 2000, the former NTC Foundation has worked alongside other organizations and owners to support the district, while also preserving 26 historic buildings.
The refreshed identity for the foundation, as officials describe it in a news release, “reflects the organization’s continued commitment to creativity, community and culture while honoring its deep historical roots and vision for the future.”
“Our rebrand is a reflection of the growth and potential that Arts District Liberty Station holds for artists, cultural organizations, and the public alike,” said Lisa Johnson, president and CEO of Arts District Liberty Station.
Some of the district’s key events include monthly First Fridays, when the public can meet artists and view their work and the Summer Arts Fest on the North Promenade in July, August and September.
The organization also provides programs to support emerging artists from both sides of the border, commissions public art to be featured at Liberty Station, encourages collaboration among district tenants and provides underserved students opportunities to engage with arts and culture organizations.
The Arts District, located in the former Naval Training Center, is home to over 100 museums, dance companies, creative retail spaces and more. Overall, Liberty Station, which began to be redeveloped in 2021, includes more than 80 restaurants and retail shops, four hotels and 380,000 square feet of office space. A new performing arts center is set to open in September.
