The Jewish Community Foundation San Diego and the Leichtag Foundation in North County have announced plans to merge their operations effective this summer to “expand capacity, expertise, and strategic relationships.”

The JCF was San Diego’s first community foundation, and has granted $2.2 billion since it’s inception in 1967. Leichtag, which dates to 1991, has granted nearly $150 million and developed the historic Ecke Ranch as a Jewish community hub in North County.

“As one organization, we will strengthen and enhance JCF‘s nearly 60-year record of expertly guiding philanthropic priorities, strategies and capacity building for our Jewish community, the San Diego region, and Israel,” the two foundations said in a statement.

“Together, we will be better equipped to address pressing community needs, celebrate joyous Jewish life, combat antisemitism, rebuild and revitalize Israel, and leverage and expand capacity, expertise, and strategic relationships.”

Jeremy Pearl will continue as CEO of the combined foundation, while Leichtag’s CEO Charlene Seidle will join the JCF staff as president and chief philanthropy officer. The members of Leichtag’s philanthropy team, known as Impact Cubed, will also join the JCF.

The combination will be effective Aug. 1, with Leichtag winding down its operations over a longer period of time.

Leichtag Commons, a community farm and educational center in Encinitas, will remain a separate entity held by Leichtag during the wind-down phase. Coastal Roots Farm, a spinoff, is already a separate nonprofit.

From its beginning, Leichtag was intended to be a limited-life foundation to drive urgency and have a “transformative impact” on the current generation.
