Bo Nix ranked low on the list of 32 quarterbacks by Pro Football Focus.
This is nothing new for Nix or Denver Broncos fans to see, as he was consistently placed near the bottom of the league last year.
But that was Nix’s rookie season. And he excelled. That’s why this year’s ranking is quite surprising.
Bo Nix ranked lower than expected by PFF
Bo Nix came in at 19th in Pro Football Focus’ offseason 2025 quarterback rankings.
On one hand, that’s much higher than he was getting ranked last year. Which was consistently in the mid-20s.
On the other hand, Nix finished as a finalist for Offensive Rookie of the Year, with fellow quarterback Jayden Daniels winning the award.
The irony was that many national analysts weren’t sold on his ability at the NFL level before his career began. And even as he played great football week after week, he barely improved in the rankings.
And yet, after helping lead the Broncos to the playoffs for the first time in eight years, the analysts continue to sleep on Denver’s QB.
According to PFF, Nix is the 19th-best quarterback heading into 2025. Geno Smith (10), Baker Mayfield (13), Kyler Murray (14), and Trevor Lawrence (16) are all ahead of the Broncos gun-slinger. It’s hard to argue any of them should be.
In 2024, Nix ranked:
12th in yards (3,775) 6th in passing touchdowns (29) 15th in completion percentage (66.3%) T-4th in interceptions (12) 24th in sacks (24) 18th in passer rating (93.3) 15th in EPA/Play (0.06) 5th in rush EPA/Play (22.07)At 19th, Nix leads PFF’s “Young players with a wide range of potential outcomes” tier. Which, maybe they fit a square peg into a round hole and placed him there.
In that group, he’s with Bryce Young–who may not be in the league much longer–J.J. McCarthy, who’s yet to play a snap, Drake Maye, Michael Penix, and Caleb Williams. As of today, Nix is head and shoulders better than all of those young guys.
Simply, he shouldn’t have been included in the tier.
Nix must avoid dreaded sophomore slump
The Denver Broncos are poised to make the postseason again, but only if Nix doesn’t have a sophomore slump.
Following his incredible rookie season, C.J. Stroud regressed and went through a slump last year. That was in part to a seriously shaky offensive line, which Nix won’t have to worry about.
Denver’s poised to have the best O-line in 2025.
Dak Prescott is another QB to have gone through that sophomore slump, but many of the other stars in today’s game didn’t regress their second year. That’s because most of them didn’t start their entire rookie year.
Patrick Mahomes only played one game. Lamar Jackson started seven games, and Joe Burrow only played in 10 games his rookie year.
So, there’s no statistical backslide for them; each only improved in Year 2.
The Broncos have made it plainly clear that Nix is their guy going forward. They brought in star tight end Evan Engram and drafted him R.J. Harvey at running back. They’ve built that rugged O-line in front of him and bolster the defense, too.
But the Broncos can’t make it back to the playoffs or be considered contenders without Nix playing well. That’s because of the importance of a quarterback in today’s NFL.
