The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has warned flyers to remember the “3-1-1 rule” while traveling this summer.
There are a projected 853 million airline passengers expected to travel within the US before Labor Day Weekend.
So to save yourself time at busy airports, make sure your carry-on is packed perfectly for security screening.
All US airports require liquids be removed from hand luggage during this process.
These items must measure 3.4 ounces or less in order to be allowed in the plane’s cabin.
All your liquids should be placed in a clear quart-sized resealable bag.
To remember the details of this restriction, the TSA have implemented the “3-1-1 rule”.
This dictates that each container of liquid, gel, or aerosol must be 3.4 ounces or under.
And all items must fit into one bag, with only one bag allowed per passenger.
While this rule applies to all carry-on bags, there are exceptions in place for certain medications and baby formula.
Items considered liquids under this rule include: toothpaste, shampoo, face wash, sunscreen, hair spray, peanut butter, mascara, and mouthwash.
There are no liquid restrictions in place for checked luggage.
The TSA also recommended starting your packing process with an already empty bag to ensure there are no prohibited items in your possession.
It is also worth noting that many European airports are more lenient with the “3-1-1 rule” with some allowing passengers to leave liquids in their luggage during screening.
TSA's 3-1-1 rule
The Transportation Security Administration regulates the amount of liquids, aerosols, and gels that flyers can bring through airport security with the 3-1-1 liquids rule.
The 3-1-1 rule consists of the following:
Each container of liquid has to be 3.4 ounces or less.
All liquids have to fit in one clear, quart-sized, resealable bag.
Finally, passengers can only bring one bag of liquids each.
However, the 3.4 ounce restriction on individual items is still in place internationally.
The travel reminder comes after the first holiday weekend following the implementation of the Real ID.
Recently, the TSA issued a warning over the restriction on lithium items while traveling.
Another reminder over a popular grooming item was also brought to light by the TSA.
Travel experts have also advised against a popular “fifteen-minute” airport theory.
