“Long time ago”: SRH head coach sheds light on Mohammed Shami’s horrible IPL 2025 ...Middle East

Just months ago, Mohammed Shami was celebrating India’s Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, having returned to international cricket after a lengthy injury layoff. But the joy has since faded. The veteran pacer’s IPL 2025 campaign with SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) has been one to forget. Poor form, expensive spells, and eventually, the axe from the playing XI – Shami saw it all in his 11th IPL season.

Shami underwent ankle surgery after the 2023 ODI World Cup and was sidelined for the entire 2024 season, including IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup. He made a strong return in domestic cricket, impressing for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 11 wickets at an economy of 7.86.

Awful IPL 2025 for Shami

His performances earned him a place in India’s white-ball squads, and although a touch rusty, he was part of the side that lifted the Champions Trophy earlier this year with nine wickets in five games. However, the transition back to high-intensity T20 cricket didn’t go smoothly.

Despite his pedigree and getting picked up for a great INR 10 crore, Shami looked out of rhythm from the start of IPL 2025. He took five wickets in the first five matches but followed that with just one in the next four. The nadir came against Punjab Kings when he leaked 75 runs in four overs — the second-most expensive figures in IPL history.

Ultimately, SRH made the tough call to drop Shami midway through the campaign, replacing him with Sri Lankan pacer Ehsan Malinga. The move paid off. Malinga hit the ground running and brought control and wickets at the death — two things Shami couldn’t consistently deliver this season. Malinga took 13 wickets in seven innings.

SRH coach backs Shami

SRH head coach Daniel Vettori was quick to defend Shami after their big win over KKR, attributing the pacer’s poor form to his long absence from T20 cricket.

“I just think the challenge is remaining consistent for him. I think that’s where he’s at his best when he hits that length, and probably just wasn’t at that metronomically best that we’ve seen in the past, and that’s partly a long layoff; that’s partly the game.” Vettori said after the SRH vs KKR game in Delhi.

“I know that he worked exceptionally hard and he was desperate to do well, but it just wasn’t quite his season, but there’s no reason why he can’t bounce back because of the quality of the bowler that he is,” he added.
