Galaxy fall to San Diego FC on stoppage-time goal as winless streak hits 15 ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

For their third consecutive game, the Galaxy scored first.

Unfortunately, just like those three games, the Galaxy were unable to translate the lead into a win and three points, but did find another cruel ending.

In the 94th minute, with a draw an almost certain thing, Galaxy defender Emiro Garces mis-hit a clearance attempt that ignited San Diego into attack. Hirving Lozano would seal the game away with a header by the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Novak Micovic for a 2-1 lead and win for the expansion team Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium.

The loss extends the Galaxy’s winless streak to 15 games (0-11-4), the record for an MLS champion in the following season.

“It’s brutal,” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. “It comes down to seeing out the game. When you’re on the road against a solid team, you’ve got to make smart decisions.

“It becomes a series of events of bad decisions, not prepared and the snowball falls down and builds momentum and they find it in the back of our net. We have to be over that part. It’s a maturity thing, an engagement thing for today …they had done so much work for 92-93 minutes to allow that situation to be the one that causes us what would have been a solid result.”

The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 40th minute goal by Diego Fagundez. However, San Diego FC’s Luca de la Torre answered in the 41st minute, eventually sending the game into halftime tied at 1-1.

“We gave it right back right away, which is a gut punch,” Vanney said.

The Galaxy were looking to build momentum coming off of last week’s 2-2 draw against LAFC, especially with two home games coming up this week (Wednesday against San Jose Wednesday and Saturday against Real Salt Lake).

“The guys have been resilient, they’ve bounced back, we know we have two home games (back-to-back) for the first time in the season, we got to bounce back,” Vanney said. “We have to back up our partners, at the end of the game, made a couple of tough decisions, we’ve got to back them up and come out Wednesday fighting and defending our home turf.

“Coming down on the road and (getting a) draw, probably wouldn’t have been the worst thing. They had chances, we had chances …it would have been a nice builder with the two home games. Now we have to show some resilience and come back and battle again.”
