AN iconic restaurant in the Bay area, which wowed famous punters from presidents to mayors in its 32 years, has announced its closure.
San Francisco’s financial district restaurant, One Market, which held a Michelin Star from 2008-2012 has been forced to close due to its owner’s retirement.

Co-owner Michael Dellar, 80, announced the June 11 closure after “failing to find the right suitor” to buy the restaurant before he retired.
“We tried to find the right suitor,” Dellar told SFGATE, “We actually had a number of opportunities to sell the restaurant, but the situation just didn’t work out.”
Dellar started considering selling One Market during the pandemic when business took a massive hit.
Foot traffic and revenue plummeted overnight, forcing a temporary closure in early 2020.
It revamped as a successful in-house pop-up that Autumn, serving up popping pastrami sandwiches.
It was the first business to serve Boichik Bagels in the Bay area before a mini-chain opened three San Francisco stores and expanded nationally.
But due to the continuation of hybrid working after the pandemic, sales remained “significantly lower than pre-pandemic,” Dellar lamented.
Despite a 2022 resurgence in the financial district One Market had to pivot to operating only on weekdays.
“Some neighbourhoods prospered during the pandemic,” Dellar said. “The Financial District had a harder time.”
One Market caused a stir, receiving glowing reviews, when Dellar and then business partner, chef Bradley Ogden, opened the doors to the swanky restaurant in 1993.

“We created a very special restaurant,” Dellar told SFGATE.
He added: “We did everything top drawer … you know, the millwork package. The kitchen was like a hotel kitchen because of the catering and special events opportunities.”
Renowned Examiner food critic Jim Wood ordered spicy shellfish risotto and shrimp cakes at its grand opening branding it “one of the best meals I ever ate in San Francisco.”
A high point of the estimated 3 million meals it served was hosting the NFL during Super Bowl 50 in 2016.
Diners reacted to the news on social media, making a trip down memory lane.
One wrote: “Takes me back, my very first job out of college in San Francisco in the mid-90s was working at Accenture (Andersen Consulting way back then) in the tower and One Market was where your boss took you to lunch if they really liked you.”
Another wrote: “So said, Another Business Closes Under President Trump.”
