Long weekend alert! Are there any two words more glorious in the fair English language? This San Diego weekend, test that theory with outdoor fests, a new exhibit at a popular attraction and the launch of the Summer Movies in the Park season.
The reason for our long weekend, of course, is melancholy. We pause to give thanks to those who paid the ultimate price while stepping up to serve our country. The USS Midway Museum has programming beginning Friday to pay respects, from “Ribbons of Tribute” – thousands of yellow ribbons to be tied along the flight deck fence – to several musical performances and “Meet the Aviator” opportunities, all leading up to the National Moment of Remembrance, at 3 p.m. Monday.
It’s the first weekend for Birch Aquarium‘s “Living Seas,” a new exhibit where guests can get a fish’s eye view of everything from a Giant Pacific Octopus to a coral reef while also peeking at what life is like beneath the nearby Scripps Pier. General admission is $30. Hours this weekend are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sure, go to the nearest cineplex. But we’ll take our flicks with food trucks, lawn games and inflatable slides too. Kick off Summer Movies in the Park with Moana 2 at Waterfront Park. Activities start at 6 p.m. Saturday with the movie to follow by 8 p.m. More than 100 parks and recreation centers countywide will play host through the summer, all the way to Nov. 1.
