ACC commissioner Jim Phillips spoke to ESPN’s Heather Dinich on Thursday after news that the College Football Playoff would change its seeding methods.
Starting with the 2025 season, the Playoff bracket will be directly seeded based on teams’ CFP ranking. As a result, instead of a first-round bye for the top 4 conference champions, the top 4 teams in the CFP rankings regardless of conference would be given a bye.
Under the new seeding method, the 2024 bracket would have looked much different. For the purposes of the ACC, the league’s conference champion no longer has a clear path to a first-round bye.
“We all have a responsibility to serve our constituents while also being mindful as to what’s best for college football. Today’s decision was done in the best interest of the sport. It may not always benefit the ACC, but it was the right decision and that’s a responsibility I take very seriously,” Phillips told Dinich.
The previous method proved unpopular. Texas, for example, despite a No. 3 CFP ranking, was seeded 5th in the bracket since it didn’t win the SEC. Penn State, ranked No. 4, was seeded 6th since it wasn’t the Big Ten champion. Meanwhile, Boise State, ranked No. 9, was a 3 seed as the third-highest ranked conference champion (out of the Mountain West).
