University’s reigning state champion boys tennis team will attempt to claim a third consecutive title at the CIF/USTA Southern California Regional this weekend at The Claremont Club.
The Trojans (25-1) open the eight-team tournament against Buchanan of Clovis (17-4) on Friday at 11:15 a.m.
With a victory, University would face the Peninsula-Canyon Crest winner in the semifinals at 2:15 p.m.
JSerra (16-1) makes its regional debut Friday by taking on Palisades Charter of Los Angeles (23-4) at 12:45 p.m.
If the Lions advance, they would play the Harvard-Westlake-Torrey Pines winner in the semifinals at 3:45 p.m.
The championship match is Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The winner faces the Northern California champion in the CIF State final on May 31 at Sierra Sport and Racquet Club in Fresno.
Last season, University beat Torrey Pines in the regional final en route to winning the inaugural state title.
University enters the regional after capturing its fourth consecutive CIF-SS Open Division title.
On May 16, the Trojans defeated Harvard-Westlake 10-8 in the final with the clinching points coming from the sophomore doubles pair of Tyler Chandler and Reid Hashimoto.
University won its 13th section title under coach John Kessler and 16th overall.
Earlier this season, the Trojans captured their 10th team title at The Ojai.
JSerra, led by first-year coach Robert Chu, earned its spot in the regional by defeating Beckman 10-8 in the first round of the section Open Division playoffs. The Lions lost to Harvard-Westlake 11-7 in the semifinals.
