The announcement today was made following recommendations by independent pay review bodies.
Doctors’ union the British Medical Association (BMA) has said it will be balloting its members over possible industrial action.
Which NHS staff are getting a pay rise?
Under the new proposals, there will be pay rises for the following members of staff within the NHS in England:
consultants specialty doctors resident doctors specialists GPs dentists nurses health visitors midwives ambulance staff porters cleanersThe pay rises will differ across the NHS workforce, with doctors set to receive a larger increase than nurses and other healthcare staff.
Resident doctors, formerly known as junior doctors, will receive a 4 per cent rise plus a consolidated payment of £750.
When will the NHS pay rise come into effect?
All the pay rises are being backdated to 1 April this year. They are due to appear in staff pay packets from August.

Which is why, despite the difficult financial situation the nation faces, we are backing our health workers with above inflation pay rises for the second year in a row.
“In the past 10 months, through our Plan for Change, we have worked with staff to cut waiting lists by 200,000 and put the NHS on the road to recovery. These real-terms pay rises demonstrate our commitment to continue on our shared mission, to build and NHS fit for the future.”
Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced the pay rises (Photo: Carl Court/Getty)“It is particularly welcome as it comes amid significant pressure on the public purse, and so the NHS will in turn focus on reform, cutting waste and reducing duplication to be as efficient as possible, while also offering patients faster and better care.”
What have the unions said about the pay rise?
The BMA said a pay uplift of 4 per cent for most doctors has “does little to address the historic pay erosion they’ve suffered for over 15 years”.
“As it stands, resident doctors are vindicated for their decision to announce a ballot for industrial action opening later this month, because Mr Streeting is not, so far, committing to meaningfully restoring their pay.

“Doctors’ pay is still around a quarter less than it was in real-terms 16 years ago and today’s ‘award’ delays pay restoration even more, without a government plan or reassurance to correct this erosion of what a doctor is worth.”
“This pay award is entirely swallowed up by inflation and does nothing to change the status quo – where nursing is not valued, too few enter it and too many quit.
“It is a grotesque decision to again favour doctor colleagues for higher increases than nursing and the rest of the NHS. Starting salaries for nursing staff remain too low.”
