As the Toronto Blue Jays look to complete a series sweep of the San Diego Padres on Thursday, they’ll have to do it without one of their Silver Sluggers.
Anthony Santander will not suit up after leaving Wednesday night’s contest due to hip inflammation.
The 30-year-old left in the seventh inning of what ended up as a 14-0 win for the Blue Jays, finishing the game having gone 1-for-3 with a single off the top of the wall in right field. He also hit a two-run homer in the series opener on Tuesday.
Jonathan Clase slots into Toronto’s lineup on Thursday in place of Santander after pinch-hitting for him the night before. Clase went 1-for-1 in his lone at-bat during the Blue Jays’ dominant victory, picking up a two-RBI double with the bases loaded.
After the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Santander is day-to-day going forward, per Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
“It was a little bit awkward and I don’t want to take any chances with losing him for an extended period of time, so we’ll see how he is tomorrow,” Schneider said.
The 30-year-old switch-hitter has been dealing with hip and shoulder injuries over the past few weeks. He missed time in Toronto’s series against the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers due to the ailments.
With his three trips to the plate on Wednesday, Santander is now slashing .188/.266/.33 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in his debut season with the Blue Jays.
Toronto signed the 2024 Silver Slugger to a five-year, $92.5-million contract in the off-season.
