CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Charlotte City Council member Tiawana Brown and her daughters are facing wire fraud charges, according to Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
The indictment alleges that Brown and her daughters, Tijema Brown, 30, and Antionette Rouse, 33, fraudulently filed applications to receive COVID pandemic relief funds.
The women are accused of trying to defraud the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program and its Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) between April 2020 and September 2021 by submitting loan applications with false information for a purported business. This reportedly included false documentation like fake tax forms.
At least 15 applications were submitted, and no less than $124,165 was obtained in the alleged scheme. The women reportedly used the money for personnel expenses, including an alleged $15,000 for a birthday party for Tiawana Brown.
The three are charged with wire fraud conspiracy and wire fraud. They face a maximum of 20 years in prison for each offense.
This alleged scheme happened before Tiawana Brown was elected to the Charlotte City Council. Brown made history as the first previously incarcerated person to serve on the council after formerly serving four years in prison for fraud.
"I want to be clear: these allegations concern actions that took place before I took office,” said council member Brown. “I have always been transparent about my past and have worked tirelessly to serve my community with integrity and dedication.”
She is expected to address the media on Thursday morning regarding the allegations.
