CSK head coach Stephen Fleming feels this MS Dhoni-led side’s pacer could be “handful” in England ...Middle East

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has thrown the spotlight on Anshul Kamboj, hailing the 23-year-old pacer as a potential game-changer for India’s upcoming Test tour of England. Kamboj, who usually goes under the radar, belies his impressive skills – his accuracy, seam movement, and calmness under pressure could make him a dark horse in England, where conditions often favour seam bowlers.

Fleming backs CSK’s Kamboj

Speaking after CSK’s loss against the Rajasthan Royals, Fleming described Kamboj as “an ideal bowler for English conditions,” noting his deceptive pace – clocking around 138-139 kmph – and a hard-hitting length that troubles batters even on flatter surfaces. “He just gets the ball to wobble. You have seen it in this year’s IPL how he has performed on reasonably flat wickets. I believe he will do well on that tour (of England) if he gets conditions that seam a bit and a little bit of swing,” said the former New Zealand captain.

“He will be an absolute handful (in English conditions). He has got some real potential with both white and red ball. We’re happy with his development and the opportunity he has taken this year,” said Fleming. “He’s shown great temperament under pressure. But what really excites me is how well he controls the ball when the conditions give him a little assistance. That’s a skill that’s hard to teach – it comes with instinct and he has it.”

From Ranji Trophy to India A

Anshul Kamboj’s rise has been methodical. In November 2024, he etched his name into domestic folklore with a sensational 10-wicket haul (10/49) in a Ranji Trophy innings against Kerala. That performance, coupled with 34 wickets at an economy of 2.80 in the 2023–24 season, earned him a spot in the India A squad for the tour of England.

While his IPL 2025 numbers – 5 wickets in 7 matches – may not turn heads, his economy of 8.3 is the best for any CSK bowler this season and the lowest for any uncapped pacer. Add to that a strong Vijay Hazare Trophy showing (17 wickets in 10 games), and the selectors’ interest feels justified. With a red-ball challenge ahead, Kamboj might be India’s next big fast-bowling story in the making.
