LOS ALAMITOS — If there is any truth to the axiom that “hitting is contagious,” then most of the players on the Los Alamitos softball team have become afflicted with the bug.

Every starter in the Los Alamitos lineup had at least one hit and the Griffins had 11 hits overall in a 7-1 victory over La Serna in a CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinal Wednesday at Los Alamitos High School.

The Griffins (19-12) will play host to Santa Margarita in a semifinal Saturday. The Eagles defeated Ganesha, 2-1, on Tuesday.

Through three playoff games, the Griffins have scored 23 runs and collected 29 hits.

“We’ve been seeing the ball well over the last couple weeks,” Los Alamitos coach Rob Weil said. “We’ve been getting some good hacks in batting practice during the week at practice. The kids are hitting in good situations. They’re hitting better pitches. They’re hitting in counts better.”

The bottom of the Griffins’ lineup performed particularly well.

No. 9 hitter Alivia Magallanes went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Freshman pitcher Jaliane Brooks, who hit eighth in the lineup, had an RBI single in the second and Alexis Galicia, who pinch hit for Brooks in the third, had an RBI single and scored a run.

“Once our bats start going, then all of us follow,” Magallanes said. “So, I think we’re doing really good on that right now.”

Los Alamitos opened the second inning with four consecutive singles.

Later in the inning, Los Alamitos had two runs and the bases loaded with two outs when Audrey Hobbs hit a bases-clearing double, giving the Griffins a 4-0 lead.

The Lancers (18-11) got a run back in the third on a sacrifice fly from Isabella Sanchez, scoring Paulina Ortega from third.

Los Alamitos came right back with three more runs in the third, with Ryann Velazquez, Morgan Fitzpatrick and Galicia driving in one run each.

Brooks pitched her second complete game in a row after going 5 2/3 innings in the Griffins’ 9-2 victory over South Hills in the first round.

“I’m glad I get to pitch and hit in the same game,” Brooks said. “I feel good just knowing my team has my back. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

The Griffins are playing in a division semifinal for the first time since 2022, when they reached the Division 1 finals and lost to Roosevelt, 6-4.
