Ruben Amorim has thrown his Manchester United future into doubt once again following their chastening Europa League final defeat.

The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday night, a result that sees Spurs end their 17-year trophy drought.

As a result, United will not appear in Europe next season with Spurs’ victory seeing them earn qualification for the Champions League as a result.

It adds to an already disappointing campaign for the club, who sit 16th in the Premier League heading into the final day.

Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford in November has failed to inspire a turnaround in their fortunes.

United have since won just 16 of their 41 matches under the former Sporting Lisbon boss.

And just six of those victories have been in the league, where they are currently winless in their last eight matches.

The Portuguese has suggested the powers that be may not feel he’s the man to take the club forward despite having two years left on his deal.

Following the defeat to Spurs, an emotional Amorim told reporters: “If the board and the fans feel I am not the right guy I will go tomorrow with no compensation. But I will not quit.”

However, he reiterated that he remains ‘really confident’ in himself to turn around the clubs fortunes.

Speaking to TNT Sports, the United boss admitted: “I’m confident that I’m still the guy. More than (in) the beginning.

“I know that it is going to be tough. I know that we lost against an English team. I know that the patience of the fans is going to be really short next season.

“But I guarantee you I will not quit, I will not go away, so at this time I am really confident.”

The 40-year-old penned a contract through to the summer of 2027 as he replaced Erik ten Hag in the dugout just six months ago.

It is not the first time he has hinted at walking away from United amid their poor run of form during his tenure.

Earlier this month, Amorim made similar comments after a home defeat to fellow strugglers West Ham.

He also claimed reaching the Europa League final merely papered over the cracks at the club.

Amorim told the BBC: “Everybody has to think seriously about of a lot of things.

“Everybody is thinking about the [Europa League] final. The final is not the issue. We have bigger things to think about.

“I’m talking about myself and the culture in the club and the culture in the team. We need to change that.

“It’s a decisive moment in the history of the club.

“We need to be really strong in the summer and to be brave because we will not have a next season like this.

“If we start like this, if the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different people.”

United cannot finish higher than 14th in the Premier League this term going into their final match of the season at home to Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Red Devils are already guaranteed their lowest points tally since 1978 this season.

Meanwhile, their current league position would represent a lowest finish since returning to the top-flight 50 years ago.
