Texas A&M rides Jace LaViolette grand slam to blowout win over Mississippi State ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Texas A&M entered the SEC Baseball Tournament with an expectation of work to do to reach the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies will leave the first round with a resounding win in shutout fashion, trying to build momentum for a deep run in Hoover.

Originally, Texas A&M, as the 14-seed, was slated to play 11-seed Mississippi State on Tuesday evening. Severe weather postponed that matchup to Wednesday morning, and it was all about the Aggies when things finally started.

MSU starter Ryan McPherson found himself in trouble in the 2nd inning when the first 4 batters all reached, including an RBI single by Ben Royo. A bases-loaded hit by pitch with 1 out made it 2-0 and brought elite slugger Jace LaViolette to the plate.

That’s when the heavy blow was delivered with LaViolette blasting a towering grand slam way out of right field for a 6-0 lead. It’s LaViolette’s 18th home run of the season, and it was the major blow in the game.

The Aggies would tack on a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd and add another insurance run to make it 9-0 in the 7th, but it was more than enough offense in this one. A&M used 4 pitches to complete the shutout with starter Ryan Prager going 5.1 innings. Prager scattered 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 to set the tone on the mound.

On the flip side, McPherson was tagged for some key hits, giving up 5 earned runs in just 1.2 innings on the mound. He also surrendered 2 walks and a HBP in the rough outing.

The win sends the Aggies into the 2nd round and a Thursday matchup vs. 6-seed Auburn. That game will be the final matchup of the 2nd round, but kicks off Thursday’s schedule at 12 pm ET after the severe weather from Tuesday.

Even with the loss, Mississippi State was squarely projected as an NCAA Tournament team ahead of the week, according to the latest projections produced by D1Baseball. However, Texas A&M, the preseason No. 1 in the country, was listed under “four to watch,” so it’s likely the Aggies need to keep winning in Hoover to feel confident in a chance to reach the final field.
