Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals is here with the New York Knicks set to host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.
The Knicks are trying to get back to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. On the other side, the Pacers haven’t won the Eastern Conference since 2000. Either way, a drought of roughly a quarter century will be broken in the coming weeks.

Tyrese Haliburton, Indiana: Lower than 9 assists
Tyrese Haliburton is averaging 9.3 assists per game in this postseason, but he’s only hit this once in his last 5 games. New York is one of the most physical teams in the league and I expect the Knicks to provide a bit more resistance to Haliburton than either Milwaukee or Cleveland was able to consider their injury situations.
One big factor here: the Pacers are shooting over 40% from 3-point range in the postseason. They will almost certainly see some regression in the near future. They were a good-but-not-great 3-point shooting team in the regular season, but their role players (Andrew Nembhard, Myles Turner and Aaron Nesmith) are all over 45% on good volume from downtown during the playoffs. If those 3-point makes dry up, which they should, then Haliburton’s assist numbers will suffer.
Jalen Brunson, New York: Lower than 28.5 points
Brunson has often been great during this postseason, but his overall numbers aren’t quite as efficient as you might expect given that he has the Knicks in the conference finals. Brunson’s effective field goal percentage in the playoffs is just over 50%. I think this number might be a bit inflated due to Brunson’s reputation.
Brunson only scored 29+ points twice against Boston. Over his last 8 postseason games, he’s averaging just 26.6 points per game on 43% shooting from the field and 37% from beyond the arc. Brunson also finished under this projection in 2 of 3 regular-season games against the Pacers this year.
Josh Hart, New York: More than 9 rebounds
The Pacers have been incredible so far this postseason, but they do have a weakness: offensive rebounding. Indiana put up an O-board rate of 21.3% during the regular season, which ranked 29th out of 30 teams. That has remained consistent during the postseason too. They’re facing a big, physical Knicks team that ranked in the top 10 in defensive rebounding during the regular season.
Josh Hart is a big part of those rebounding efforts. There’s 2 things we know about Hart: No. 1, he’s going to play a ton. Probably well over 40 minutes unless it’s a blowout. No. 2, he’s going to do everything in his power to cause havoc and make winning plays. That often means rebounding. He’s averaging 8.5 boards per game in the postseason. I’m willing to back him to get to 10 while projecting some offensive regression for Indiana and after accounting for the Pacers’ lack of a presence on the offensive glass.
