One of the great things about showing up, intentionally, as a creative person is that people treat me as a creative person. Others’ expectations have influence on my choices, helping me be who and how I want to be.
Another benefit is that folks bring me things they think I will find interesting in my work.
Towards the end of my time teaching at Duke a student brought me what she identified as an ancient Japanese saying.
“If you want to understand something new, don’t study it, get used to it.”
I was such an immediate fan—that’s always my inclination, to get used to it—that it took me a year or so to realize there was a more useful way of stating this, one that doesn’t reject study, but does find it’s proper order.
“If you want to understand something new, get used to it. Then study it.”
Getting used to something—think about immersing yourself in its essence—activates the limbic system and let’s remember the three main functions of this system. It regulates emotions; it processes memories; it links our conscious and subconscious thinking. That makes later analytical study more resonant.
In fact neuroscientist Mary Helen Immordino-Yang’s work shows that feelings precede deep understanding. Without context and relevance the details feel abstract.
By first getting a feel for and a sense of the problem area or the opportunity fields we give our brains a scaffolding that helps our study be richer, easier, more memorable.
Like the rock singer says “you gotta move.”
“Exploring Your Creative Genius” takes an expansive view on what it means to be creative and entrepreneurial in an ongoing conversation led by Carl Nordgren — entrepreneur, novelist, and lifelong student with decades of experience growing his own creative capacity and assisting others to do the same in exciting new ways!
