NCS baseball, softball roundup: De La Salle crushes Pittsburg in first-round matchup ...Middle East

The De La Salle baseball team bounced back on Tuesday after losing to Granada last week in the East Bay Athletic League tournament championship game.

The Spartans, the second seed in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs, routed No. 15 seed Pittsburg 12-5 to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday at home against No. 7 Petaluma.

De La Salle (23-4) jumped out to an 8-0 lead through two innings and didn’t look back. Oklahoma commit Alec Blair went 2 for 2 and knocked in four runs. Senior shortstop Antonio Castro went 3 for 3, drove in two runs and scored three times. 

The Concord school finished with 13 hits.

Pittsburg ended its season 19-6. 

Division I

No. 3 Foothill 8, No. 14 Liberty 2 

Foothill put this one away early, jumping out to an eight-run lead through five innings in a dominant performance at Liberty. The Lions hosted the game because they won a league title and Foothill did not. 

Junior Austin Rost and freshman Aiden Tavares each went 2 for 3 and Jack Fowler drove in three runs. Senior Take Sato-Kreis struck out six and allowed one run in six innings.

Foothill (20-6) will host No. 6 Benicia on Friday. 

No. 5 College Park 4, No. 12 Heritage 3

College Park will move on to the second round after an 11-inning battle with Heritage that ended in dramatic fashion.

With the score tied at 3 and the bases loaded, TJ Reinhart was hit by a pitch, which scored junior Riley Meadows to end the game. 

Senior James Voorhies was solid on the mound, striking out nine while allowing three hits and two runs in eight innings. 

College Park (15-10) will host Clayton Valley on Friday in a matchup between Diablo Athletic League teams. 

No. 13 Clayton Valley 6, No. 4 Windsor 5 

The Ugly Eagles made the 80-mile trek to Windsor and came out with a win in extra innings. 

In the top of the ninth, junior Jack Campbell broke a 5-5 tie after his RBI single scored Josiah Morris. Pitcher Artur Kleyman closed the game, retiring three consecutive batters to seal the win for Clayton Valley.

Morris went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. 

Clayton Valley improved to 18-7. 

No. 6 Benicia 9, No. 11 Redwood 5

Carlos Largaespada had three RBIs to lead Benicia past Redwood.

The Panthers scored five runs in the first inning and led by as many as six as they cruised to a home win. 

Benicia improved to 17-8. 

No. 7 Petaluma 5, No. 10 Castro Valley 1

Castro Valley’s magical season came to an end as the Trojans fell to Petaluma on the road. 

Petaluma pitcher Arlo Pendleton held Castro Valley to two hits across 5 ⅔ innings. 

Castro Valley ended its season 21-6. The Trojans won their first league title in at least 20 years last week. 

No. 9 Casa Grande 5, No. 8 Dublin 0

Pitcher Brady Laubscher blanked Dublin’s high-powered offense, striking out eight and allowing three hits in a complete-game shutout. 

Casa Grande (19-7) will travel to top-seeded Granada on Friday. 

Division III

No. 1 California 6, No. 9 San Leandro 1

California was dominant in its playoff opener as the Grizzlies defeated San Leandro at home. 

Nolan Jess had two hits and two RBIs while Logan Kellogg, Angelo Sherman and Kai Watts each knocked in a run. 

California (13-11) will host No. 9 Washington-Fremont on Friday. 

No. 9 Washington-Fremont 12, No. 8 Eureka 4

The Huskies made the long 300-mile trip to Eureka and kept their season alive with an impressive win. 

Washington’s Ezekiel Porter and Ehkam Braich each had three RBIs. The Fremont school took complete control of the game after scoring eight runs in the fourth inning. 

Washington improved to 15-10. 

Softball

Division II

No. 8 Newark Memorial 9, No. 9 Redwood 0

Freshman Ariana Romo pitched a two-hitter and senior Andrea Tall had a double, a triple and a home run as Newark Memorial rolled past Redwood.

Newark Memorial (18-4) will travel to top-seeded Cardinal Newman on Friday. 

Division III 

No. 12 Berkeley 11, No. 5 Cloverdale 3 

Berkeley scored six runs before the fifth inning to upset Cloverdale on the road. 

Freshman Mia Kaufman had a monster game, totaling six RBIs and three hits. Freshman Olive Lightfoot struck out 10 in six innings. 

Berkeley improved to 11-15 and will play Alhambra on the road on Friday. 

No. 11 San Leandro 14, No. 6 Moreau Catholic 4

San Leandro scored 12 runs in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie as the Pirates upset Moreau Catholic on the road in a five-inning, 10-run rule result.

Shortstop Jade Orta led the way with four RBIs. Malia Bromstead and Jacella Onate each knocked in two runs. 

San Leandro (19-7) will play No. 3 Arroyo on Friday. 

Elsewhere

El Cerrito’s baseball team won its Division III first-round matchup against San Rafael 9-1. The Gauchos will host No. 12 Freedom on Friday. Freedom defeated James Logan 6-3. … In Division III, Piedmont held on to beat Archie Williams 7-6. The Highlanders will have another home game on Friday when they play Northgate, which defeated Bishop O’Dowd 9-2. … In softball, No. 10 Heritage beat No. 7 Dougherty Valley 9-2 in the Division III bracket. The Brentwood school will travel to Santa Rosa to play second-seeded Maria Carrillo on Friday in the quarterfinals.
