Fans grew concerned Monday night when Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suddenly canceled. Kimmel rarely misses a show, and the last-minute absence was uncharacteristic. On Tuesday, the 57-year-old was back on the air and explained that he canceled the episode because his eldest daughter, Katie, went into labor—right at the time the show tapes. The devoted family man chose to be by his daughter’s side instead of taping his late-night show.
Kimmel, who shares two younger children with wife and writer Molly McNearney, also has two older children from his first marriage. He joked, “I have two older kids. My oldest daughter—she’s 83 years old—her name is Katie. She had a baby girl right at the time we shoot our show last night, so I decided to be there instead of here.”
But when his beloved Aunt Chippy, who lives in Las Vegas, couldn’t be in Los Angeles for the birth, Kimmel shared a hilarious phone call he had with her. He noted that she’s very particular about baby names—making for a classic family moment only Jimmy Kimmel could deliver.
