Nick Saban discusses possible expansion of College Football Playoff ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Nick Saban wasn’t always in favor of expanding the College Football Playoff.

That said, the views of the former Alabama head coach and current “College GameDay” analyst have changed, amid discussion of the Playoff field expanding to 14 or even 16 teams.

“Back in the years, I was never for expanding the Playoff because I thought bowl games were really important to the history and tradition of college football. But now that we have expanded the Playoff, now the bowl games have taken a less significant role,” Saban said during his annual “Nick’s Kids” charity golf tournament at the Vestavia Country Club in Alabama. “So I think expanding the Playoff and having as many teams involved as we can without playing too many games for the players, I think that’s a little bit of a concern, that’s probably a good thing.”

In the 10 years of the Playoff before 2024, Alabama appeared in all but 2: 2019 and 2022, winning 3 times. Then came the 2024 season and the Playoff’s expansion to 12 teams. Ultimately, the Crimson Tide, who finished No. 11 in the Playoff ranking in 2024, fell just short of making the 12-team field.

While further expansion isn’t a done deal — and there’s certainly several logistical boxes to be checked, like the fate of some bowl games — it appears that it’s only a matter of when it will happen, not if.
