I've written somewhere in the ballpark of 382 stories throughout my career as a journalist, according to my very official portfolio of work I like to call the desktop folder, and yet I still remember the first time I read something that really made me feel something.
I was 13, finding a hand-written letter from a friend tucked away in my locker, my name printed in bubble letters. I relished the moment I could sneak away to the bathroom, unwrap the highlighter-yellow sheet of origami paper, and get lost in the spilled secrets, spring break plans, and day-to-day minutiae. My favorite part came at the end, sometimes scribbled in all caps or cursive and obviously followed by a teeny heart in place of a period: PS. The juiciest bits always followed that.
Which, ironically, brings me to today, where I am breathing-into-paper-bag ecstatic to announce my new role as the editor-in-chief of PS.
This month marks my seventh year at the brand, which I first joined as beauty director after stints across print magazines like Allure, Shape, and Seventeen (and, lest my dad never let me forget, the ad department of Golf Digest, briefly) and digital publishers like Refinery29. I knew instantly, though, that Popsugar was special. I was captivated by the brand's positivity that seemed to permeate through the proverbial halls, and it trickled down to the people, the ideas, and the work.
What I'm most excited about today, however, is its next evolution. In a world where everyone is clamoring for human eyes and seven seconds of your attention, and when the news cycle feels heavy no matter which direction you look, I want PS to be the reprieve from it all. The exhale or laugh after you watch a video. The opposite of a doom scroll - the bright spot on the internet.
My first order of business: re-ignite that spark of positivity and flicker of authentic connection in every story we tell. Make joy the hallmark of everything we do, whether it's content that makes you feel seen (ahem, anyone who finds sitting in your car for long periods of time so cathartic), satiated (did you know the manicures at the Met Gala can cost up to $11K?), or celebrated (no shame for the men who love women-dominated fitness classes).
To be clear, we'll spotlight the messy, awkward, and humanness of life, too. (My therapist tells me that both things can exist at the same time, and I believe everything Jennifer says.) You can expect a balance of those undeniably feel-good moments with the realities of chronic illness, difficult family dynamics, disparities in women's sports, and a shared dispassion for the rain showerhead.
Importantly, just as hand-written letters have evolved into texts, voice notes, Instagram captions, Substacks, and memes you send in the group chat, I'm excited to bring you new ways to connect with and consume said content.
In the coming weeks, we'll be launching a whole slate of newsletters curated by PS editors, featuring a mix of personal columns, shopping hacks, mini celebrity interviews, and hot takes on the buzziest topics in wellness, beauty, fitness, and lifestyle. (Not to mention exclusive weekly content you can only find there, like shop our Slack staff picks and confessions-style essays, because sometimes we just can't help ourselves.) We'll be giving our socials a tune-up to prioritize the things you care about, like exclusive access to celebrities, workout tips, hair hacks, and more.
PS also has the smartest, most talented editors who are obsessed with all the things you love, and you'll be able to connect with them in many new ways. That includes doubling-down on talent-led social videos from our team, as well as the industry experts we love in our PS Council, so you can really get to know the faces behind the brand.
We can't wait to introduce you to more interactive formats for our insatiable franchises like Show the Receipts, where we break down exactly how much it costs to get shit done, and Hype Check, where we try the latest viral trends. We'll be kicking off a brand-new parenting destination that spotlights the highs of the job but also the real moments, because I've changed a diaper or 20 and know first-hand it's not always pretty. Finally, PS will expand on our key editorial tentpoles like Condition Center, a trusted hub for easy-to-digest health information, and Skinposium, an A-to-Z guide to all things skin care.
Don't worry, you'll still be seeing plenty of editorial and audio content with our podcast partner Vivian Tu, founder and CEO of Your Rich BFF (with hopefully plenty more where that came from), and we'll always be there to help motivate you to move with our accessible (read: free) PS Fit workout videos. Because you deserve all the good things, and don't you forget it.
More soon,
PS. -script of any note is where you spill something new or tease what's ahead. That's how I'm envisioning the future of PS, the brand. Exploring and celebrating the rollercoaster of life, in all its stomach-dropping turns and unadulterated joy. Buckle up, baby.
