An attempt by Trump and JD Vance to humiliate Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office got him nowhere. Neither did trying to announce unconditional ceasefires, not least because Russia broke the few it claimed to agree to. Direct phone calls between Trump and Vladimir Putin couldn’t secure a breakthrough either.
But Trump isn’t ready to give up just yet. On Monday, after his latest unproductive phone call with Putin, the US President suggested that negotiations should take place in the Vatican, under the auspices of Pope Leo XIV – the first American to ascend to the highest office of the Catholic Church.
In theory, then, Trump’s attempt to invoke the Pope might be one of the most normal things he has done in his second presidency. But to assume this and to grant Trump such benefit of the doubt would be premature – there are likely to be more cynical, and more earthly, explanations for his latest move.

But Trump also likes to boast of aggressively funding the military, and is trying to start a new tradition of grand, Soviet-style military parades through Washington DC.
Trump famously shook hands with Kim Jong Un in his first term, despite his administration having achieved nothing in talks with North Korea, and symbolically moved the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, gaining nothing in return. These generated headlines, coverage, and lots of ingratiating attention towards Trump, and left no legacy behind.
Trump has been gifted with the first American Pope in history, though sadly for him, not one he can claim is part of the MAGA movement. Vance has already attended the papal inauguration and extended an invitation for Leo XIV to visit America.
Trump’s offer to Russia and Ukraine to use the Vatican is typical of the man. He is giving away something that isn’t his, and dragging the Pope, one of the most dignified offices in the world, and the leader of more than a billion Catholics, into Trump’s own reality TV show. Worse, Trump is setting Leo XIV up to take the blame for failure to meet his unrealistic peace promises, too.
If the Vatican does agree to host these talks, it would surely take a miracle to prevent Trump from turning St Peter’s Square into his latest soundstage.
