The 40,000-sq-m development will display cultural artefacts and art, exploring traditional crafts, customs and social values through exhibitions, workshops and activities.
Inspired by the vernacular Najdi architecture, the museum will be built with locally produced clay mud-bricks, ZHA’s first adobe project.
It will have a conservation laboratory, a “knowledge exchange” hub and a training area.
The ground-breaking ceremony (pictured) coincided with Museum Day and was attended by representatives from the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (Misk), Diriyah Company and ZHA.
The ground breaking ceremony (Asaan/Misk Heritage Museum)Jerry Inzerillo, Diriyah Company’s chief executive, said: “The museum supports our broader goal of establishing Diriyah as a world-class destination that celebrates history, culture, and national identity.
“We’re excited about the programs and activities Asaan will bring, as they will offer something truly special for the community and for visitors from around the world.”
The name Asaan is derived from an Arabic word meaning heritage passed down through generations.
The museum will form part of Diriyah’s contribution to the country’s “2030 Vision” project, aiming to diversify the economy.
