A fatal hit-and-run collision in eastern San Diego County claimed the life of a 31-year-old motorcyclist over the weekend, authorities confirmed Monday.
The man was heading north on state Route 67 in Lakeside on a 2016 Harley-Davidson when the driver of an oncoming 1998 Mitsubishi SUV made a left turn against a red light at Willow Road directly in the rider’s path, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The resulting crash sent the motorcyclist tumbling onto the roadway, mortally injured, CHP public-affairs Officer Jasmine Lopez said. The man, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.
Following the collision, the SUV veered off the street and crashed into a traffic light, Lopez said. The driver then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
“This is an ongoing investigation,” Lopez said Monday. “It is unknown at this time if drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in the crash.”
