Blackburn Rovers have announced that 20 players are leaving this summer, including the popular Adam Forshaw.

Rovers narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs as they finished seventh and just two points outside the top six.

This comes after an eight-match winless run from February to April that dented their hopes of promotion to the Premier League.

Blackburn have become the latest EFL side to release their retained list ahead of the summer transfer window.

One of their most notable departures is Forshaw, who joined the club in January on a short-term deal after leaving Plymouth Argyle.

The 33-year-old midfielder had his contract at Plymouth mutually terminated and scored his only Blackburn goal against them.

Forshaw netted in Rovers’ 2-0 win and celebrated in front of his former club’s bench, though it was later revealed his family were sat behind them.

Blackburn fans have been seemingly left heartbroken by his exit as one on X said: “Who’s cutting onions, man?”

“Farewell sweet Prince,” added a second alongside an image of his celebration against Plymouth.

A third also said: “Forshaw come back.”

Blackburn said that they will ‘keep in close contact’ with Forshaw, who is ‘entitled to explore other options’.

Also leaving the club are Dilan Markanday, Jack Vale, Zak Gilsenan, Patrick Gamble, Tom Bloxham, Jordan Eastham, Rhys Doherty, Isaac Whitehall and Jalil Saadi.

Alex Baker, Adam Caddick, Paul Murphy-Worrell, Lewis Bell, Bradley Taylor, Jackson Shorrocks, Nathan Willis, Stephen Edmondson and Teddy Ramwell will also depart at the end of their contracts.

Furthermore, Owen Beck, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Dion Sanderson, Cauley Woodrow and Emmanuel Dennis will return to their parent clubs after loan spells.

“Rovers would like to place on record its sincere thanks to all the players who will be leaving the club for their contribution and commitment during their time at Ewood Park, and we wish them all well in their future careers,” the club added.

Blackburn started the season with John Eustace as head coach but he left in February to join his former club Derby County.

Ex-West Brom and Watford boss Valerien Ismael replaced him and was winless during his first seven matches.

However, he ended the campaign with four wins from five as Rovers closed in on the play-offs, only to draw 1-1 with Sheffield United on the final day.
