Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says he has full confidence in Ryne Nelson’s ability to step up for the team in wake of Eduardo Rodriguez’s injury.
Nelson will make his second start of the season on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers against righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Nelson starts in place of lefty starter Eduardo Rodriguez, who was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a shoulder inflammation.

Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Monday that Nelson’s performance could make his decision difficult of who will be in the starting rotation when Rodriguez returns from the IL.
“We know Eduardo is on the shelf 12 more days by the rule and he’s gonna get some opportunities to block out that noise and makes this decision really hard on us,” Lovullo said. “I know he’s ready for this opportunity and I’m really eager to see him do it.”
Lovullo said Nelson ability to step into any role the pitching staff needs is one of his great qualities as a pitcher.
“The beauty of Nelly is we’ve punched him in the face, we’ve pushed him around, we’ve sent him up and down early in his career and he just rolls with the punches,” Lovullo said.
Diamondbacks’ Ryne Nelson numbers so far in 2025
Nelson started out in the bullpen to start the season after losing out on a starting role opportunity following spring training. Nelson was in the unofficial long-reliever role for the Diamondbacks as the team tried to keep him stretched out.
Nelson made his first start of the season on May 5 in place of Corbin Burnes with mixed results. In 4.1 innings, Nelson gave up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks in the Diamondbacks’ 5-4 loss against the New York Mets.
In 10 games pitched, Nelson has a 1-1 record and a save with a 5.13 ERA with 28 strikeouts and a 1.22 WHIP.
Nelson had plenty of starting experience last season, making 25 starts and appearing in 28 games. Nelson posted a 10-6 record with a 4.24 ERA, 126 strikeouts and a 1.25 WHIP.
