The Prime Minister is facing growing unrest among MPs first elected in 2024, who are demanding he change course with his plans on immigration and welfare reform.
Several backbenchers are expected to make their feelings heard when Starmer faces his MPs at the weekly Parliamentary Labour Party meeting on Monday evening.
“Loads of us spent loads of personal capital persuading candidates to run, and we then found out the national plan was to tell the best of our movement to walk into the machine guns.”
Another newbie MP said: “We f**ked it with the winter fuel allowance. It was the worst summer for that. It will take some convincing to get people back.”
“I don’t think it’s nervousness [among colleagues], I think people just aren’t happy with what we are doing and want us to change course. To do something different.”

As many as 100 Labour and suspended former Labour MPs have signed letters that are being circulated calling for a rethink on the proposed benefit cuts, with reports suggesting that up to 170 MPs could be prepared to rebel in a vote on changing personal independent payments (PIP) next month.
MPs from the 2024 intake have also voiced concerns over Starmer’s immigration speech last week, which drew significant criticism after he warned the UK risked becoming an “island of strangers”.
“Also, it’s not going to work because we can’t out-Reform Reform. I think we risk losing a lot of progressive voters, who will say ‘I have been with you through thick and thin and now you are doing this’.”
A Labour MP first elected last year predicted more unrest on immigration, said: “The people speaking out have been mostly the usual suspects, but not only them. I suspect it will get more fractious.”
“It is clear that immigration is one of the key priorities for people, along with cutting NHS waiting lists, tackling the cost of living and growing the economy,” the source added.
