If not for a slight hiccup a week ago, Rosary Academy would have been standing alone atop the podium for finishing first in the team standings in Division 4 of the CIF SS Southern Section Track and Field Finals on Saturday at Moorpark High School.
But even after the Royals’ county-leading 4×100 relay team failed to qualify for the finals because of a dropped baton in the prelims a week ago, Rosary’s talented corps of young sprinters still scored enough points to finish first at Moorpark.
Instead of winning the team title by themselves, however, the Royals shared the top spot with St. Mary’s of Inglewood with both teams scoring 73 points.
The Royals scored 41 of their points in the sprints and 16 in the jumps.
“To spot a team 10 points and then come back and tie, that’s amazing,” Rosary coach Brandon Thomas said. “St. Mary’s is really good in the sprints, so to go toe-to-toe with them really shows how far we’ve come.”
The Royals’ 4×400 relay team of Tra’Via Flournoy Jada Faison, Maliyah Collins and Justine Wilson set a new county mark of 3 minutes, 48.92 seconds, topping the previous mark of 3:49.99 held by JSerra.
Rosary’s two standout freshmen, Collins and Flourney, finished first and third, respectively in the 100 meters.
Wilson, a junior, won the 200 and ran second in the 400.
As expected, Aliso Niguel’s Jaslene Massey won the shot and the discus, throwing the shot 48 feet, 8 inches, and setting a personal best in the discus with a throw of 160-10.
Massey leads the state in the shot and leads the county in the shot and discus.
“Coming into the competition with the shot, I felt a little nervous,” Massey said, “but after the warmup I felt confident in what I could do. Overall, it went OK. I’d definitely like to see myself PR in shot. In the disc, it felt super good to PR. I was super relaxed, which isn’t normally the case because of my lack of experience in the disc.”
In the girls Division 1 1,600, Trabuco Hills’ Evangeline Williams, the county leader in the event, finished second but established a new county-leading mark of 4:47.46.
“The race played out well for her,” Trabuco Hills girls coach Dennis Kelly said of Williams. “She ran a sensible race. She was in a good position to win in the last 80 meters, but she lost to a girl (Braelyn Combe of Santiago of Corona) that’s a really good runner.”
Williams’ teammate, Holly Barker, finished third in 4:50.18.
Barker then came back to win the 3,200, finishing four seconds off of her county-leading time of 10:07.93
“I felt much better in the 3,200 than the 1600 today,” Barker said. “I felt way smoother. I felt like I was way more awake in a weird kind of way. But my legs were tired from the 1,600 for sure. But I think it would definitely help to have someone pacing with me in a good field.”
JSerra captured its third consecutive CIF-SS team title, winning Division 3 with 84 points, 25 points ahead of second-place Calabasas.
The Lions’ Reese Holley won the 1,600 in 4:59.59 and teammate Anne Elise Packard won the 800 in 2:09.82.
JSerra’s 4×400 relay of Morgan Woolforde, Packard, Chloe Elbaz and Maya Woolforde finished first in 3:50.08.
The Masters Meet next Saturday, May 24, will have 18 qualifiers from the CIF-SS Finals. The four division champions automatically qualified for Masters along with the next best performances to get to 18 qualifiers.
