Servite speed was on display again Saturday in the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships at Moorpark High.
The sprinters led Servite to a second-place finish in Division 3 with 104 points. First-place Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks had 106.5 points.
The Servite 4×100 relay team won in 40.43 seconds. The foursome set the Orange County record in the event earlier this season with a time of 40.00.
There were many highlights for Servite coach Brandon Thomas.
“It was a good day,” Thomas said. “The weather was kind of cool. Not ideal conditions to go sub-40 (seconds in the 4×100). But if you would have told me a few months ago that we’d go 40.43 in the finals, I’d have been fired up.”
Servite’s 4×400 relay team was second in the Division 3 race at 3 minutes, 16.47 seconds. Cathedral’s winning time of 3:15.38 set a division record.
Servite sophomore Benjamin Harris, the anchor leg of that relay team, won the Division 3 100 in 10.32, beating his previous county-leading time of 10.33.
Harris also won the Division 3 200 in 20.96 seconds, the best time in Orange County this season. In that race, the Friars also places 3-6 – sophomore Robert Gardner (21.24), freshman Jaelen Hunter (21.48), freshman Jace Wells (21.54) and freshman Kamil Pelovello (21.70), respectively. The county record is 20.68 set by Servite’s Max Thomas (now at USC) in 2022.
Santa Margarita senior Leo Francis was second in the Division 3 200 at 21.00. Francis ran the 100 in a personal-best 10.45 to finish third.
Hunter was first in the Division 3 400 at 47.10 seconds, the second-best time in county track this season after his 46.32 two weeks ago in the Trinity League finals.
Another strong Servite performance was supplied by sophomore Blaise Burwell, who finished second in the Division 3 110 hurdles at 14.23 seconds, the fastest time in Orange County this season and only .01 of a second behind Saturday’s Division 3 winner Aaron Uzan of Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks. Burwell later was second in the Division 3 300 hurdles at 39.09.
Tesoro junior Peyton Brown took over the Orange County lead in the 300 hurdles with his 37.90 that was good enough for second place in Division 2. Beckman senior Jett Gary equaled his personal-record 38.25 in the Division 1 300 hurdles.
The Orange County boys who run the longer distances had plenty of success, too.
Dana Hills senior Evan Noonan won the Division 2 1,600 in 4:03.71 to set a division record in the event. Aidan Antonio of Woodbridge was second (4:06.94) and Tesoro’s Griffin Kushen was third (4:08.08).
Noonan later won the Division 2 3,200 in 9:20.85. That was off of his county-leading 8:55.95 he ran at the Arcadia Invitational last month.
JSerra senior Bradley Arrey won the Division 3 1,600 in 4:09.74. Corona del Mar senior Max Douglass was second at 4:10.96.
Arrey’s teammate, Alden Morales, was first in the Division 3 800 at 1:50.79 to trim .01 seconds off his previous county-leading time.
Mater Dei senior Brandon Gorski won the Division 2 high jump at 6 feet, 8 inches. Gorski has battled injuries this season.
Santa Margarita senior Brady Furr was the Division 3 pole vault champion with a clearance of 15 feet, 8 inches.
