Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

Jerome Campbell won two individual titles Saturday at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and University of Northern Colorado teammate Zander Cruzan added one win on the final day of the four-day meet at Sacramento State.

Campbell, a 22-year-old junior sprinter and hurdler from Jamaica, won the 100 meters and 110-meter hurdles titles and all-Big Sky Conference honors.

Campbell’s success at the meet continued months of strong performances dating to the end of the indoor season and led to two other awards: the men’s co-most valuable athlete and most outstanding performer. Campbell shared the men’s co-most valuable athlete honor with Northern Arizona’s Desmond Lott.

Campbell, started the day Saturday at Hornet Stadium with the fastest times in the 100 meters and 110-meter hurdles after the preliminaries. He matched his preliminary times in both events on the way to defending his titles in the finals Saturday afternoon.

Campbell ran 13.43 seconds in the 110 hurdles for the second time in two days; a season best mark set Friday. Less than an hour later, Campbell ran 10.25 seconds in the 100 meter final to win — also with the same time as in the preliminaries.

Campbell won both events at the 2024 Big Sky meet, but with slower times. Last year, he won the 100 meters in 10.33 seconds and the 110 hurdles in 13.81.

His 13.43 in the 110 hurdles is 13th best in Division I this year, according to the Track & Field Results Reporting System website www.tfrrs.org. It was also a meet record, lowering the previous best of 13.58 seconds.

Campbell’s personal-best time in the event is 13.30 seconds set in May 2024 at an NCAA regional qualifying meet.

Cruzan was all-Big Sky in two events. He won the 400 meters in 46.42 seconds, lowering his time by three hundredths of a second from the preliminaries Friday evening. Cruzan finished third in the 200 meters in 21.41 seconds. He shared men’s freshman of the year honors with Montana’s Braden Ankeny.

Cruzan is a freshman from Cortez and Montezuma-Cortez High School. Cruzan also won the 400-meter title at the conference indoor meet hosted by Northern Arizona in late winter.

Cruzan and Campbell joined UNC teammates Edgar Garcia and Floyd Samuels Jr. to finish second in the 4×100-meter relay. The men ran 40.51 seconds to place behind Montana State at 40.44.

On Friday, UNC junior women’s jumper Kiana Van Haaren finished third in the long jump. Van Haaren’s best jump was 20-feet, 3 3/4 inches (6.19 meters) to earn all-Big Sky Conference honors. Caitlin Simmons of Eastern Washington won with a distance of 20-8. Hailey Coey of Montana State was second (20-5).

In April, Van Haaren, a junior from Texas, set a UNC record with a jump of 20-5 3/4 (6.24 meters) at the University of Oregon.

Van Haaren, Marely Del Campo, Vanessa Ward and Alison Hoodak finished fifth in the 4×100-meter relay in 47.26 seconds.
