The 15 public SEC schools spent more than $42 million combined during the 2024 fiscal year, according to financial reports obtained by AL.com’s Matt Stahl.
Four schools in the league each spent more than $4 million on recruiting during FY 2024, with Tennessee topping the conference. According to Stahl, the Vols reported $5.4 million in recruiting spending from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024. Alabama spent around $5.3 million while Texas A&M and Georgia both spent just north of $4 million.
Tennessee’s recruiting spending was more than double what it was the previous year, according to Stahl.
While fiscal years don’t quite line up perfectly with the recruiting calendar, the timeline would heavily feature the 2024 recruiting cycle. Including transfers, Georgia signed the top-ranked class in 2024. Alabama (second) and Texas (fifth) both signed top-5 classes while Florida, Auburn, and LSU signed top-10 groups. Tennessee signed the 13th-ranked class during the cycle.
Auburn notably reported just $1.5 million in recruiting spending for FY 2024, more than only 3 other SEC schools. And that was down from the $1.6 million it reported during the previous fiscal year.
Mississippi State was the only public SEC school that spent less than $1 million on recruiting during the fiscal year. The Bulldogs have won only 1 of their last 16 league games in the SEC. Perhaps there’s a correlation there.
According to Stahl, spending was up throughout the league from where it was in FY 2023. Only 3 schools spent more than $3 million during the previous fiscal year. Georgia led the way at $5.3 million. Texas A&M spent $4 million while Alabama spent $2.9 million.
