Aaron Rai almost left a fan at the PGA Championship with a painful souvenir.
The incident occurred during the second round at Quail Hollow as Rai found himself in the rough on the 16th hole.
Rai had a moment to forget during the second round at the PGA ChampionshipGettyRai looked to drill the ball underneath the branches of a tree while patrons stood to the right.
However, the world No. 29’s shot did not go to plan.
Instead of punching the ball to the left of the tree, Rai’s effort slammed straight into it and came inches away from hitting a fan in the knee.
A female fan was also lucky not to have been hit in the head as she sat on the ground to watch Rai’s shot.
Fans on social media were quick to react to the frightening scenes.
One wrote on X: “Oh wow, Aaron Rai nearly just domed somebody up here on 16. Drilled a tree instead and it bounced back onto the fairway. Legit scary.”
Another posted: “Probably not how Aaron Rai drew this one up.”
A third said: “Aaron Rai is one of us.”
A fourth added: “Aaron Rai hits tree, nearly breaks patrons kneecap at PGA Championship.”
Rai ultimately double-bogeyed the hole in what was a tricky round for the Englishman.

A bogey and birdie on the 12th and 14th respectively brought Rai back to one-under par.
However, the double-bogey on the 16th saw him finish the second round one-over.
Rai now sits T17 on three-under alongside nine other players including Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau and J.J. Spaun.
Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas sits atop the leaderboard at Quail Hollow on eight-under, with Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick locked in a three-way tie for second alongside Si Woo Kim and Matthieu Pavon.
Kim and Pavon surged into contention following stunning second round performances as they scored seven-under and six-under respectively.
