Despite the fact that Roston Chase hasn’t played in the format since March 2023, the West Indies have made the audacious and surprising decision to name him as their new Test captain. Kraigg Brathwaite, who captained the team in 39 Test matches and led it for eight years, is replaced by now Chase, who recently turned 32.

Why was Kraigg Brathwaite replaced?

Brathwaite’s tenure, while steady, saw West Indies win just 10 Tests and finish eighth in all three editions of the World Test Championship (WTC). His own form with the bat also dipped in recent times—after averaging 62.45 in 2022, he managed just 846 runs in 17 Tests since 2023, with one century to his name. Brathwaite stepped down earlier this year, paving the way for a leadership transition.

Chase, who has played 49 Tests, brings with him 2,265 runs and 85 wickets. However, his recent form leaves much to be desired. Since the start of 2020, he has averaged just 17.81 with the bat and has not scored a century since February 2019. His selection, therefore, is less about recent numbers and more about leadership potential.

CWI on why was Roston Chase choosen?

Cricket West Indies (CWI) emphasized that Chase was chosen following a rigorous and modern selection process. A shortlist of six candidates underwent psychometric testing, structured interviews, and tactical evaluations. The shortlisted candidates were – Tevin Imlach, John Campbell, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves and Jomel Worrican.

“Each candidate went through a detailed assessment process that included psychometric testing to evaluate leadership style, behaviour, and overall suitability for the role, as well as structured interviews focused on tactical approach, communication skills, and team culture,” read a release from CWI.

“This selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken,” said CWI president Kishore Shallow. “I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket.”

“I fully endorse this appointment,” said new head coach Daren Sammy. “Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him—we’re building something special.”
